(The influence of Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) as Orienta...)
The influence of Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) as Orientalist and biblical historian and critic is legendary. Wellhausen's sweeping knowledge of Eastern languages enabled his exhaustive studies of the history of Israel and of biblical literature. He is famed for his analysis of Old Testament texts. In Pharisees and Sadducees Wellhausen turned his attention to Jews at the turn of the era. In this little volume -- which he termed an "essay" -- Wellhausen provides a firm foundation for understanding Judaism's influential Pharisees and Sadducees and a keen analysis of their importance in the context of the beginnings of Christianity.

Julius Wellhausen was a German biblical scholar and orientalist, noted particularly for his contribution to scholarly understanding of the origin of the Pentateuch/Torah. He is credited with being one of the originators of the documentary hypothesis which proposes that the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) was derived from originally independent, parallel and complete narratives, which were subsequently combined into the current form by a series of redactors (editors).

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Reste Arabischen Heidentums Merkwurdig ist,...)
Wellhausen was born on 17 May 1844 at Hameln in the Kingdom of Hanover, the son of a Protestant pastor.
Having studied theology at the university of Gottingen under Heinrich Ewald, he established himself there in 1870 as privat-docent for Old Testament history.
In 1872 he was appointed professor ordinarius of theology in Greifswald. Resigning in 1882 owing to conscientious scruples, he became professor extraordinarius of oriental languages in the faculty of philology at Halle, was elected professor ordinarius at Marburg in 1885, and was transferred to Gottingen in 1892.
Wellhausen made his name famous by his critical investigations into Old Testament history and the composition of thellexateuch, the uncompromising scientific attitude he adopted in testing its problems bringing him into antagonism with the older school of biblical interpreters.
In 1906 appeared Die christliche Religion, mil Einschluss der israelitisch-jiidischen Religion, in collaboration with A. Jiilichcr, A. Harnack and others. He also did useful and interesting work as a New Testament commentator.
He published Das Evangelium Marci, iibersetzt und erklart in 1003, Das Evangelium Matthdi and Das Evangelium Lucae in 1904, and Einleitung in die drci ersten Evangelien in 1905.
The best known of his works are De gentibus et familiis Judaeis (Gottingen, 1870); Der Text der Bucher Samuelis untersuckt (Gottingen, 1871); Die Pharisaer und Sadducaer (Greifswald, 1874); Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels (Berlin, 1882; Eng. trans. , 1885; 5th German edition, 1899; first published in 1878 as Geschichte Israels); Muhammed in Medina (Berlin, 1882); Die Komposition des Hexateuchs und der kistorischen Bucher des Alien Testaments (1889, 3rd ed. 1899); Israelitische und jiidische Geschichte (1894, 4th ed. 1901); Reste arabischen Heidentums (1897); Das arabische Reich und sein Sturz (1902); Skizzen und Vorarbeiten (1884 - 1899); and new and revised editions of F. Quotations:
However, he resigned from the faculty in 1882 for reasons of conscience, stating in his letter of resignation:
"I became a theologian because the scientific treatment of the Bible interested me; only gradually did I come to understand that a professor of theology also has the practical task of preparing the students for service in the Protestant Church, and that I am not adequate to this practical task, but that instead despite all caution on my own part I make my hearers unfit for their office. Since then my theological professorship has been weighing heavily on my conscience. "
