The election turned out to be a closely contested three way race and he also defeated three other minor candidates. Yankowsky was re-elected to his third term winning a comfortable plurality and defeating five other candidates.
He was defeated in his bid for a fourth term in the 2004 Alberta general election by former NDP Leader Ray Martin. On June 1, 2006 Yankowsky was appointed to the first board of directors of the Alberta Association of Former MLAs.
