Admitted to Wisconsin bar, October 1, 1881, and began practice at Milwaukee. Specialty in insurance law. Was assistant counsel to attorney general of Wisconsin in case of Equitable Life Insurance Company versus Host, insurance commissioner of Wisconsin, involving distribution of $15,000,000 surplus dividend in February 1905, by Supreme Court of the Wisconsin Vice president. and general counsel Milwaukee Title Guaranty & Abstract Company.

General counsel Wisconsin Mutual Liability Company, Time Insurance Company, Advance Building & Loan Association. President New Hope Mining Company Circuit Court commissioner, January 1, since 1888. Member Wisconsin Senate, 1896-1908, 8th District (Milwaukee).
