Junjiro Shimazono served as professor at the Okayama Medical College, and then at Kyoto University. Appointed professor of internal medicine at Tokyo University (1924). He studied beriberi for more than 30 years after he saw many soldiers affected by that disease during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) in which he participated as a surgeon. In cooperation with Dr. Umetaro Suzuki hediscovered that beriberi is caused by lack of vitamin Bj which is contained in the embryo bud of rice.
