Justin Timberlake is an American singer-songwriter, actor, dancer, entrepreneur and record producer who achieved fame as a member of the hugely successful boy band *NSYNC before establishing a career as a solo performer. Currently, Timberlake is considered to be one of the world's best-selling music artists. His other ventures include record label Tennman Records, fashion label William Rast, and the restaurants Destino and Southern Hospitality.
Background
Justin Randall Timberlake was born on January 31, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Lynn (Bomar) Harless and Charles Randall Timberlake, a Baptist church choir director. Justin Timberlake grew up in Shelby Forest, a small community between Memphis and Millington. He has two half-brothers, Jonathan (born September 12, 1993) and Stephen (born August 14, 1998), from Charles' second marriage to Lisa Perry. His half-sister Laura Katherine died shortly after birth on May 12, 1997.
Timberlake's family circle includes a number of musicians; his grandfather nurtured his talent, taught him to play the guitar, and introduced him to music from the likes of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. His uncle was also part of a band and his father introduced him to the works of Eagles and Queen. As a result, young Timberlake was well nurtured in a wide diversity of music. Performing as a child, Timberlake sang country and gospel music: at the age of 11, he appeared on the television show Star Search, performing country songs as "Justin Randall". By that time, he also began listening to rhythm and blues musicians from the 1960s and 70s, such as Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
Education
Justin Timberlake attended E.E. Jeter Elementary School in Millington, Tennessee until 1993, when the 13-year-old landed a coveted spot on The Mickey Mouse Club television show. He and his mother moved to Orlando to pursue his acting and singing career. After the sixth grade, Timberlake was homeschooled through his middle school and high school years so he could focus on becoming a star.
Justin Timberlake started his career as a cast member in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in 1993, where his castmates included future girlfriend and singer Britney Spears, future tourmate Christina Aguilera, future bandmate JC Chasez, and future movie actors Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell. Timberlake then recruited Chasez to be in an all-male singing group, organized by boy band manager Lou Pearlman, that eventually became NSYNC. In May 1997 the band released their debut album, which sold over 11 million copies. The second album No Strings Attached (2000) and third Celebrity (2001) proved financially successful. Featuring No. 1 single Gonna Be Me, both albums collectively sold millions of copies. Other noteworthy singles included Bye Bye Bye, Pop, and Girlfriend. The group began touring worldwide, performing at major venues and became the third-best-selling youth band in history.
However, in 2002, NSYNC dispersed and Justin Timberlake started his career as a solo artist, debuting with the hit song "Like I Love You." Later that year, he released his first solo album, Justified, which sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.
At the end of the 2003 year, Timberlake recorded a song entitled "I'm Lovin' It". It was used by McDonald's as the theme to its "I'm Lovin' It" campaign. The deal with McDonald's earned Timberlake an estimated $6 million. A tour entitled Justified and Lovin' It Live was included with the deal as well.
In February 2004, during the halftime show of the Super Bowl XXXVIII broadcast on the CBS television network, Timberlake performed with Janet Jackson before a television audience of more than 140 million viewers. At the end of the performance, as the song drew to a close, Timberlake tore off a part of Jackson's black leather costume in a "costume reveal" meant to accompany a portion of the song lyrics.
After the incident, Timberlake paused in his career, during which he found time to work with rappers Snoop Dogg and Nelly Furtado. Timberlake also collaborated with the Black Eyed Peas, receiving a Grammy nomination with the band for "Where Is The Love?"
In 2005, Justin started his own record company, JayTee Records, and the next year, he released his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. (The album's lead single, "SexyBack", spent several consecutive weeks at No. 1.) Some of the album's other hit tracks include "My Love," "What Goes Around Comes Around," and "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows," with the last two songs garnering Grammys.
In 2008, Timberlake helped make Madonna's single, "4 Minutes", a Top 10 hit. Not only did he provide complimentary vocals, but he was also a co-writer of the song. Timberlake also contributed to several other tracks on Madonna's Hard Candy album.
From 2008 to 2013, Timberlake almost completely stepped away from music temporarily and focused on his acting career.
In 2013, Justin Timberlake returned to the scene with hit single Suit & Tie. He then released another album The 20/20 Experience that March. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went double platinum.
Timberlake quickly followed The 20/20 Experience with The 20/20 Experience Part 2 of 2 in October of the same year. The follow-up album didn't find the same critical acclaim that the previous iteration found, however, the album still produced the hit single "Take Back the Night." In the spring of 2016, Timberlake released the lead single "Can't Stop the Feeling," which is featured on the DreamWorks animation Trolls, in which he is also an executive music producer. The track went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as 16 other countries.
In January 2018, Timberland dropped the first single from his upcoming studio album, a slow bedroom number titled "Filthy." He followed later in the month with the Top 10 hit "Say Something," featuring Chris Stapleton. The album, Man of the Woods, which also includes collaborations with Timbaland and Pharrell Williams, was released shortly before the singer's performance at the Super Bowl LII halftime show in early February.
On July 3, 2018, Timberlake released a new track, "SoulMate." To some critics, the samba-like, beach-ready jam marked a welcome return to his roots, following the unevenness of Man of the Woods.
Also in pursuit of an acting career, Timberlake has experienced success in both film and television. While parts in Alpha Dog (2006) and Black Snake Moan (2006) garnered little notice, he did hit it big as the voice for a young King Arthur in 2007's smash animated film Shrek the Third, which featured Mike Myers as the title character. Other work soon followed as Timberlake teamed up with Myers once again when he appeared in the 2008 comedy The Love Guru. He also had a role in the drama The Open Road (2009) with Jeff Bridges and Mary Steenburgen.
One of Timberlake's most notable performances to date was in 2010 The Social Network, the drama about the creation of Facebook. Timberlake played real-life internet tycoon Sean Parker in the film. Turning to more comedic fare, he starred in Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz and in Friends with Benefits with Mila Kunis, both in 2011. Timberlake also has a leading role in the 2013 thriller Runner Runner with Ben Affleck. Keeping in stride with his latest string of more serious roles, Timberlake has also taken on the part of Neil Bogart in the film Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).
In addition to his roles in films, Timberlake has made a name for himself in the television industry as well. Timberlake made his first appearance on Saturday Night Live as both a host and musical guest in 2006. His routines and comedic timing made him a fan favourite among the hosts who have graced the stage. Having won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 2009 and 2011, he has proven himself as a versatile actor with his work in TV.
In addition to performing, Timberlake embarked on several business ventures. Notably, he took a minority stake in the advertising group Specific Media when it acquired the social networking site Myspace in 2011. Serving as a creative consultant for the company, he helped repurpose Myspace, which had conceded the majority of its former market to Facebook, as a community for musicians and their fans.
Timberlake has also co-owned or provided celebrity endorsement for three restaurants in the United States: "Chi" opened in West Hollywood, California in 2003, and "Destino" and "Southern Hospitality" in New York opened in 2006 and 2007, respectively. In 2005, Timberlake launched the William Rast clothing line with childhood friend Juan ("Trace") Ayala.
An avid amateur golfer, in 2007 Timberlake purchased the run-down Big Creek Golf Course in his hometown of Millington, Tennessee, which he redeveloped as the eco-friendly Mirimichi Golf Course at the cost of some $US16 million. It was reopened on July 25, 2009, but closed again on January 15, 2010, for further improvements expected to take six months. It was reported on November 7, 2014, that Timberlake had sold Mirimichi to Three Star Leasing LLC for $500,000.
Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel are also minority owners of the Memphis Grizzlies. In October 2018, Timberlake and Levi's debuted their collaborative clothing line collection "Fresh Leaves."
Justin Timberlake provides celebrity endorsement for many commercial products as well, this aspect of his business being managed by IMG since April 2008. Major endorsements in 2009 included Sony electronic products, Givenchy's men's fragrance "Play," the Audi A1, Callaway Golf Company products, and in 2011, Myspace.
In 2014, Timberlake partnered with Sauza Liquors to re-launch his own version of the beverage as part of the Sauza franchise: Sauza 901. In 2016, he became an investor in beverage company Bai Brands. In 2017, Tiger Woods and Timberlake acquired an ownership stake in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.
Justin Timberlake is best known as one of the most popular and commercially successful singers across the world. Throughout his solo career, Timberlake has sold over 32 million albums and 56 million singles globally, becoming one of the world's best-selling music artists. Often cited as a pop icon, Timberlake is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including ten Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Brit Awards, and nine Billboard Music Awards.
Considered a pop icon by media outlets, his work has influenced numerous artists, including Olly Murs, Maroon 5, Britney Spears, Lorde, Justin Bieber, Joe Jonas, Shawn Mendes, Thomas Rhett, Ed Sheeran, Jason Derulo, Liam Payne, Bridgit Mendler, Tori Kelly, Hunter Hayes, BoA, Seungri, Taeyang, Rain, Lloyd Banks, Maluma, and Rosalía.
According to Billboard in 2017, Justin Timberlake is the best performing male soloist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2007 and 2013.
In 2003, Rolling Stone named him the biggest pop star of the year and featured him on the magazine's cover, commenting that he "attained the one thing most pop stars don't, and the one thing he wanted more than anything else: credibility."
Timberlake's first two solo albums Justified (2002) and FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006) established him as one of the most commercially successful singers, with each exceeding sales of seven million copies worldwide.
After his song ‘Cry Me a River’ won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2004, The ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine ranked the song at number 20 on its list of ‘100 Best Songs of the 2000s’.
In October 2005, the Grammy Association presented Timberlake with an award for his humanitarian efforts in Tennessee, alongside writer/director Craig Brewer, also a Memphis native.
His album ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ received several Grammy Award nominations and sold over ten million copies worldwide, which made it the number one on the Billboard 200. Marilyn Manson further cited it as one of the main songs that influenced him. Billboard editor Jason Lipshutz named the song's music video "one of the more brilliant musical moments in pop music since the dawn of the century."
His second album FutureSex/LoveSounds was placed at 46 on Rolling Stone's 100 Best Albums of the 2000s, the ninth best album of the decade for Entertainment Weekly, and the greatest of the decade for Vibe. The lead single, "SexyBack," helped introduce EDM sounds to top 40 radio, as it brought together variations of electronic dance music with Timberlake's R&B sounds.
Aside from earning critical acclaim for its parent album, according to Sia Michel of The New York Times, he was responsible for popularizing in 2006 the catchphrase "I'm bringing sexy back"; it spawned a "phenomenon" in which video-makers spoofed the song.
According to Billboard, FutureSex/LoveShow was the third highest-grossing concert tour of 2007 and highest solo.
Timberlake's' 20/20 Experience World Tour was an international success and became Timberlake's most successful tour to date. The tour was the highest-grossing led by a solo artist in 2014, and one of the highest grossing tours of the decade. For its associated album, The 20/20 Experience, Timberlake was named Artist of the Year with the top-selling album by Apple Inc.'s annual list of best-sellers.
In October 2015, Justin Timberlake was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, becoming its youngest member.
In a 2016 article of The Hollywood Reporter, editor Scott Feinberg stated Timberlake is "widely regarded as one of the greatest all-around entertainers in the history of show business."
On April 30, 2018, Timberlake reunited with his NSYNC bandmates to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In the United States, five of Timberlake's singles have topped the Billboard Hot 100, his most recent being "Can't Stop the Feeling!". He topped nine Billboard Year-End charts for 2013, including Billboard 200 Artists and Billboard 200 Albums. For 2014, Timberlake was named Billboard Top Male Artist. Billboard also published a list of "Greatest of All Time Pop Songs Artists" in 2017, where Timberlake ranked at number 5, being the top male soloist. The magazine ranked him 25 on their "The Top 60 Male Artists of All-Time" list in 2018 as well, and 64 on "The Hot 100's Top Artists of All Time."
Besides his brilliant career as a musician, Justin Timberlake has also achieved much in the television and movie industry. From 2008 through 2012, Timberlake focused on his acting career, effectively putting his music career on hiatus; he held starring roles in such famous films as The Social Network, Bad Teacher, Friends with Benefits, and In Time.
On October 30, 2018, Justin Timberlake's book, Hindsight & All the Things I Can't See In Front of Me, launched. It covers some on and off camera candid images, singer's early life and inspiration for songs.
Timberlake considers himself more "spiritual than religious". Memphis was influential in Timberlake’s life, both musically and religiously. He says: "I sang in church growing up. Memphis is the blues capital of the world, we like to say."
In fact, Justin was raised as a devout Southern Baptist. His grandfather was a preacher at a Baptist church and his father was a choir director at his local Baptist church. But stardom tends to take its toll on the religious devotion of its victims and even as early as the N’Sync days, Timberlake seems to have given up on the faith of his childhood. When asked if he was religious on the Larry King show, Timberlake said: "I think the term for me would be more spiritual than religious."
But that doesn’t mean that when Timberlake goes home, he doesn’t slip into his old religion like a glove. He said, speaking in the third person for some reason: "When Justin comes home he would not even sit down and have a sandwich that he doesn’t say a blessing for."
Politics
Timberlake has managed to keep out of politics–for the most part. But, like many, he was sucked into the Obama phenomenon. In 2008, he and then-girlfriend Jessica Biel publicly endorsed Obama–a first for both of them. Timberlake said: "We’ve never publicly endorsed before. But we’ve never been so inspired by one person."
In 2012, when Obama made history by announcing his support for gay marriage, Timberlake was among the many celebrities to laud the president, tweeting: "Barack Obama inspires me once again. True leadership is when you are willing to risk your power and voice so that ALL of ours can be heard."
Timberlake, when asked if he would ever consider running for office, said he would “suck” at being president–maybe, maybe not. But he did say that he supports any politician willing to stand up against injustice–Ok, vague but still cool. Timberlake went on to comment on the current state of American society, saying: "America used to be the country of boundless possibilities, but today you don’t get as many of them – unless you have money. And that’s not fair. I just wish there would be a simple solution, then we could transform it into a philosophy." This quote seems intimate like the real Timberlake is concerned, but humble. He sees a problem and as someone with a bit of wisdom, doesn’t think he has the answers.
Views
Justin Timberlake is known as a philanthropist. During his career, he has been active in several charitable pursuits, initially through NSYNC's "Challenge for the Children" aimed at a range of charities, and since 2001 through his "Justin Timberlake Foundation," which initially funded music education programs in schools, but now has a much broader agenda.
In November 2007, Timberlake donated $100,000 from takings from his Australian tour to Wildlife Warriors founded by Steve Irwin. On March 23, 2008, he donated $100,000 to the Memphis Rock N' Soul Museum and another $100,000 to the Memphis Music Foundation.
On November 12, 2007, the PGA Tour announced that Timberlake, an avid golfer who plays to a six handicap, would become the host of the tour's Las Vegas tournament starting in 2008. The activity was a success and was repeated in 2009.
Timberlake often participates in the American Century Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Both annual tournaments raise money for a range of national and local non-profits.
In late 2012, Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel volunteered in Far Rockaway, Queens, over the weekend after the Hurricane Sandy.
Timberlake has also donated items for auction for several charities, including by Ten O'Clock Classics and MusiCares. In 2010, Timberlake participated in the Hope for Haiti Now telethon performing "Hallelujah".
In 2017, Timberlake and Eminem helped raise over $2 million for Manchester Arena attack victims.
Justin Timberlake is also a supporter of LGBT movement. After New York legalized same-sex marriage in 2011, he voiced his support for LGBT equality in the U.S., stating, "We're people and we're different, all of us. And we should be using our differences to bring ourselves closer together."
