Justo Bolekia Boleká is an Equatorial Guinean philologist, educator, scholar, poet, novelist, and political activist of Bubi background. A specialist in the Bubi language and culture, he has taught French studies at the University of Salamanca and published influential studies, poetry, fiction, and works on Equatorial Guinean literature.
Background
Justo Bolekia Boleká was born on 13 December 1954 in Santiago de Baney, on the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea. His Bubi background is central to his linguistic, literary, and cultural work, which has focused particularly on the preservation and study of Bubi language, oral tradition, history, and identity. His writing connects Bubi cultural memory with Spanish-language African and Equatorial Guinean literature.
Education
Bolekia Boleká studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he completed university training in modern philology with a French specialization and earned a doctorate in Modern Philology in 1986. His doctoral research examined the linguistic and sociolinguistic characteristics of northeastern Bubi in relation to Spanish and French in the equatorial region. He later earned a second doctorate from the University of Salamanca in 2007 for the thesis La enculturación bubi desde los préstamos léxicos del Pidgin-English. Procesos de lexicalización progresiva, supervised by Román Álvarez Rodríguez. The University of Salamanca awarded him its Extraordinary Doctorate Prize.

He served as director of the Escuela Universitaria de Educación de Ávila and later as director of the Escuela Universitaria de Educación y Turismo. His academic work has combined French studies, African linguistics, intercultural education, and research into Bubi language and culture. He has also been a visiting professor or lecturer at institutions including Nottingham Trent University, the University of Ghana at Legon, the universities of Yaoundé I and Maroua in Cameroon, and the University of Marburg. Alongside his university career, he has developed an extensive literary career as a poet, novelist, essayist, and researcher of Equatorial Guinean cultural traditions.
