Denton was born on July 22, 1941, in Winnipeg, Winnipeg Capital Region, Canada.
Kady Denton studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Chelsea School of Artist. Kady Denton studied at the University of Toronto, where she earned a bachelor's degree with honors.
From 1978 to 1985 Kady MacDonald Denton worked as a teacher at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. From 1980 to 1985 she was a member of the board of directors at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.
Kady began her career as an illustrator with Pam Zinnemann-Hope’s series of books about an irrepressible little boy and his world: Find Your Coat, Ned and Time for Bed, Ned were just two of the titles illustrated by Denton published in the late 1980s. Denton’s first two books that she both wrote and illustrated were The Picnic and Granny Is a Darling, both of which appeared in 1988. The bedtime world was again a topic for humor in Denton's 1989 picture book Dorothy’s Dream.
Denton has continued to work with other writers on books for young readers and is at home in a number of different genres, from cozy domestic scenes to fable worlds of pure fantasy. She has illustrated Til All the Stars Have Fallen: Canadian Poems for Children, a retelling of the German fairy tale The Travelling Musicians of Bremen, and has worked with author Ann Pilling on her Kingfisher Children’s Bible: Stories from the Old and New Testaments and A Kingfisher Treasury of Bible Stories, Poems, and Prayers for Bedtime. With Pilling, Denton also created a visual world for another of her 1993 books, Realms of Gold: Myths and Legends from Around the World.
Kady took part in some exhibitions with her works. Exhibitions were held at galleries in Manitoba, Canada, and included in group shows Canada at Bologna, 1990, Books from Afar, Rome Italy, 1992, and CANSCAIP Annual Exhibition, Canada, 1992, 2001.
Denton’s list of books that she both wrote and illustrated continued to grow with The Christmas Boot and Janet’s Horses. Denton also drew whimsical images for Shen Roddie’s 1997 book for preschoolers, Toes Are to Tickle. Denton’s 1998 offering, the self-illustrated A Child’s Treasury of Nursery Rhymes, includes a range of poems and folk rhymes designed to appeal to very young readers.
In addition to her own books, Denton continues to illustrate works by other authors, including Margaret Park Bridges’ companion stories If I Were Your Mother and If I Were Your Father, and Robert Heidbreder’s Wished for a Unicorn.
