Kamekichi hit the headlines in a sensational murder case. According to the story, it appears two French sailors under the influence of alcohol began to make a nuisance of themselves in the gay quarters, which irritated a sumo wrestler named Chokichi Kageyama, who threw them down. As soon as they were on the ground Kamekichi struck one of them with his fire-axe and killed him. The wrestler was expelled and Kamekichi was sentenced to death (1866).
