Kanichi Kawakami became interested in politics and joined the Communist Party. For subversive activities was arrested and imprisoned twice (1933-1935 and 1936-1940). After the end of World War II was appointed propaganda chief for the Communist Party and was elected thrice to House of Representatives, but was expelled from the House for his anti-American speech made at the plenary session.
