Kanshin Teranishi was born in Owari, Aichi Prefecture and lived about 1700.
Kanshin Teranishi was an expert swordsman and fencer. He first served oinokami Doi but resigned to teach fencing at Edo.
It is said he killed several officials of the Shogunate due to a misunderstanding and was imprisoned. After his release he turned priest and came to be known for his chivalrous nature.
He was soon after persuaded by Juzaemon Fukami to join his services and was one of the famous 13 retainers of the Shogunate that were sent to Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture).
