Karen studied at the University of Iowa, where she received Bachelor of Arts in 1969, Master of Arts in 1971, and earned Master of Fine Arts in 1972.
Karen moved to New York City in 1976 to pursue a career in photography, which was for her "visual poetry." As a photographer, she worked with many clients in corporate, advertising, and editorial capacities. Currently she shows her photographs in exhibitions, galleries, and other spaces - public places - in the United States and abroad. In 1991 she did her first book, "Reflections of New York." In 1994 she started work on "Love Me Tender: The True Story of Marilyn and the King as told by Karma Karen."
