Karen received Bachelor in French and Bachelor in Political Science at University California, Santa Barbara, in 1978. Then she got Master of Arts in Political Science at University California, Santa Barbara, in 1981, and Master of Arts in French at Stanford University, California, in 1984. Finally, she became Doctor of Philosophy in French at Stanford University, California, in 1990.
Karen was appointed lecturer of French at Stanford University in 1989—1990. Then she worked as an assistant professor at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff in 1990—1996, associate professor in 1996—2004, professor in 2004—2007, and professor emerita since 2007.
