Bendl was a pupil of Blazok and Pitsch at the Organists' School in Prague, till 1858.
For a time Bendl was a chorusmaster of the German Opera, Amsterdam. He returned 1865 to Prague, and after 1866, was a conductor of the male choral society "Hiahol".
Karl Bendl was the authoer of several Czech national and comic operas, 3 masses, several cantatas for soli, choir and orchestra; an overture for orchestra, a string-quartet, 200 Czech songs and choruses, pianoforte music, etc.
Bendl, jointly with Smetana and Dvorak, enjoyed the distinction of winning general recognition for Czech musical art.
