(Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820 explores methods of cur...)
Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820 explores methods of cure during a time when the South relied more heavily on homespun remedies than on professionally prescribed treatments. Bringing to light several previously unpublished primary sources, Kay K. Moss inventories the medical ingredients and practices adopted by physicians, herb women, yeoman farmers, plantation mistresses, merchants, tradesmen, preachers, and quacks alike. Moss shows how families passed down cures as heirlooms, how remedies crossed cultural and ethnic boundaries, and how domestic healers compounded native herbs and plants with exotic ingredients.

Kay K. Moss graduated from Duke University.
Kay K. Moss has made the study of eighteenth-century domestic life the center of her career. She has written books on the foods, decorative ornaments, and folk medicines of the rural South during that time period, and she also works as the director of the Eighteenth-Century Backcountry Lifeways Studies programs at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820 is one of Moss’s books. Moss spent fifteen years researching this volume. In the archives of southern universities and historical societies, she found twelve handwritten journals kept by men and women from the rural regions of North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, as well as a variety of letters and other documents, describing how common ailments would have been treated in Revolutionary America.
