Douglas Gordon Boughton was born on January 14, 1944, in Australia.
Boughton graduated from Wagga Wagga Teachers College with teachers certificate in 1962. He then received a diploma in art from the National Art School in Sydney, Australia in 1968. He also obtained a Bachelor of Education degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 1972 and in 1973, respectively.
In 1976, Bughton obtained his doctorate from the University of Alberta.
After the period of working as a teacher of art in Australia, Boughton started working as an assistant professor at the University of Lethbridge in 1976. Two years later, he went to the University of British Columbia, and in 1979, started working as a senior lecturer at the Salisbury College of Advanced Education in Salisbury. In two years he was appointed as a principal lecturer in art and art education, and in 1982 he started his long relationships with the South Australian College of Advanced Education, working there first as a principal lecturer and since 1993, as a professor of art and design education.
During his long teaching career, Boughton has worked as a consultant for research projects in Australia, Canada, and the United States. He also served as a world president of the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA), chief examiner in Visual Arts for the International Baccalaureate Organization, foundation director of the National Art Education Research Council of the Australian Institute of Art Education, and consulting professor in Art Education to the Institute of Education in Hong Kong.
Now Boughton holds the position of professor of art education at Northern Illinois University.

2004Boughton is a member of the Council for Policy Studies in Art Education (USA), is a Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association (NAEA), and an honorary life member of the Australian Institute of Art Education (now Art Education Australia) and the South Australian Visual Arts Education Association.
