He received an MA in Photography and Art History in 1977, and an MFA in 1980 from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Baird has been a freelance photographer since 1975. Prior to that he worked in England as a senior lecturer at the Manchester Education Committee 1970-75, and chairman of the Art Department at the Bristol Education Committee 1963-70.
He has also been a recipient of the Arts Council of Great Britain award every year from 1975 to 1978, as well as the Award Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) in 1974, and the Goldsmiths Company of London's Art History Travel Award in 1968.
Baird also researched and printed the Tom Watson Collection in 1977-78 and produced a traveling show of Watson's work for Impressions Gallery in York, England.
He also does research on the history of photography of the North East Yorkshire Coast region of England.
In England he is a member of both the National Society for Art Education and the Committee for Aerial Archaeology, an Associate of RPS and a founding member of the Crescent Arts Workshop in Scarborough.
