Foreman began his career as an associate professor of German at Davidson College in 1924, then joined Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, in 1947, remaining through 1962, when he retired. He served as visitor-in-residence at Union Theological Seminary between 1962 to 1964 and as editor of the Board of Christian Education for the Presbyterian Church in the United States from 1962 to 1964.
His first book, From This Day Forward, was published in 1950. His final volume out of five was Methuselah: Fantasy on a Moral Theme, published in 1968 by John Knox Press. He also contributed an influential weekly column to Presbyterian Outlook magazine for more than twenty-five years, and for a decade wrote The Bible Speaks, a weekly syndicated column that appeared in more than five hundred newspapers nationwide.
