(Chemistry of Free Atoms and Particles covers the chemistr...)
Chemistry of Free Atoms and Particles covers the chemistry of metal atoms and metallic molecules or fragments. This book contains 10 chapters that are organized on the basis of the Periodic Chart. Each group of elements is separated into a discussion of first the free atoms, followed by a discussion of reactive molecular forms of metal halides, oxides, and sulfides. The "Chemistry" sections are further divided into several headings, including abstraction, electron-transfer, oxidative addition, simple orbital mixing, substitution, disproportional and ligand transfer, and cluster formation processes. This book will be of value to chemistry researchers, teachers, and students.

This book presents coherent and systematic coverage of the broad and dynamic field of the free atom and cluster atom chemistry. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the current literature and describes the most important experimental techniques developed since 1980 including bimetallic clusters/catalysts, carbon clusters (fullerenes), and trapped single atoms. Metal atoms, clusters, and particles are covered in sequence with the Periodic Table.

Kenneth J. Klabunde was born on May 30, 1943, in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. He was the son of Vernon L. and Anita J. Klabunde.
Klabunde received his Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College in 1965, majoring in Chemistry, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa in 1969.
After doing postdoctoral work at Penn State University, Kenneth J. Klabunde was hired by the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. In 1979, he moved to Manhattan to become the Head of the Department of Chemistry at Kansas State University. He was named a University Distinguished Professor, and he was the founder of NanoScale Corporation. In the course of his 43-year career, he authored over 500 scholarly publications and books.
At Kansas State University, Kenneth and his group have conducted research with colleagues in Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biology, and Grain Science. These joint studies have ranged from studying the synthesis and optical properties of nanoparticles to developing new compounds for environmental remediation to the discovery and investigation of nanoscale materials with anti-microbial activity to the synthesis of "green" renewable bio-derived polymers and products. Ken's work led to extensive collaborations internationally and has included research with colleagues in Chile, Bulgaria, Israel, China, Russia, Denmark, and India.
Klabunde's admirable record of service includes advising Senator Pat Roberts' Committee on Science and Technology, serving as President of the Kansas State University Faculty Senate, and holding elected office in the American Chemical Society's Division of Inorganic Chemistry.

2001As a devout Christian, Kenneth was an active member and leader of Peace Lutheran Church and the University Christian Church in Manhattan. He was also an affiliate member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shell Knob, Missouri. Later in his life, he became a member of The Gideons International, distributing hundreds of Bibles in the last four years of his life.
Klabunde considered himself a Moderate Republican.
Klabunde's research focused on materials science, nanoscale particles, magnetic properties of nanoscale iron particles, adsorption properties of nanoscale metal oxide properties, and organometallic chemistry.
Quotations: "The one thing that helps me write is a habit of extensive reading of novels of all types, as well as the reading of scientific journals. Speed reading, organizing of chapters, and overall comprehension has been aided by reading. My job as a professor and part-time entrepreneur is forty percent reading and thirty percent writing."
Klabunde was a member of the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, and Phi Lambda Upsilon.
On April 8, 1967, Kenneth married Linda Blow. The couple had three children: Sara Huter, David Klabunde, and John Klabunde.
