Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Karas received a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University in 1986 and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law in 1991. He was a law clerk for the Honorary Reena Raggi, United States. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in 1992.
He was an assistant United States Attorney of the Southern District of New York from 1992 to 2004.
On September 18, 2003, Karas was nominated by President George West. Bush to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Allen G. Schwartz. Karas was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 3, 2004, and received commission on June 13, 2004.
On May 16, 2008, Karas sentenced Olympic gold medalist Tim Montgomery to 46 months in prison for his part in a multimillion-dollar fake-check scheme.
