(The Great White Fleet and its world cruise played a part ...)
The Great White Fleet and its world cruise played a part in the development of the modern US navy. In the early 1880s, the US navy was smaller and less seaworthy than Peru's; its technology was obsolete; and its value as an instrument of American foreign policy was nonexistent. By 1909 it was second only to the Royal Navy in size and firepower. This work describes this development in US history from Theodore Roosevelt's decision in 1880 to write "The Naval War of 1812", to the triumphant return of his Great White Fleet in 1909 from its world voyage.

(Daring expeditions on camel and yak; biplanes buffeted by...)
Daring expeditions on camel and yak; biplanes buffeted by gales in the Himalayas; shootouts with bandits as paleontologists race across the Mongolian steppes; lost cities beneath desert dunes, priceless art treasures and manuscripts along the ancient Silk Road – here are real-life adventures in the great uncharted "alluring target" of Central Asia at the dawn of the modern age. Rescued from obscurity and profiled in compelling detail are eleven explorers, scientists, mystics, and just plain adventurers – including two indomitable – who journeyed through this forbidding region between 1890 and 1935 and brought back its secrets, its treasures, its knowledge, and, as vividly presented in The Alluring Target, fascinating accounts of their travels.
