(Maybeck straddled the most important developments in Cali...)
Maybeck straddled the most important developments in California architecture of his time. From his earliest rustic shingled houses in the Berkeley hills through his work on the University of California campus, to his most famous works, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the First Church of Christ Scientist, and culminating in his modernist masterpiece, San Francisco's Family Services Building, Maybeck eclectically combined styles and methods that ranged from the Gothic through Arts and Crafts to steel and concrete. His spiritual vision still inspired architects and those who love the built environment of California.
