This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Alfred Hamlin was born on September 5, 1855, in Istanbul, Turkey, the son of Cyrus Hamlin of Waterford, Maine, and of his second wife, Harriet Martha Lovell, came of Puritan stock.
His father founded Robert College in Turkey, and Alfred was educated in the preparatory school of Robert College at Bebek, near Constantinople. He was graduated in 1875. In 1876-1877 he studied architecture at the School of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1878 he went to France to study architecture in the École des Beaux- Arts, Paris, where he remained until 1881.
Upon his return to America, Alfred Hamlin entered the office of McKim, Mead & White, architects, but after the founding of the department of architecture at Columbia, he went there to become special assistant to William R. Ware, his former preceptor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He remained with the school for the rest of his life, filling many positions. In 1887 he was made instructor in architecture; in 1889, assistant professor of architecture; in 1891, adjunct professor of architecture; in 1904, professor of the history of architecture, and in 1911-1912, he was given the directorship of the department.
As commissioner for Greek relief of the Near East Relief, Hamlin made an extended and difficult inspection trip throughout the Near East in the summer of 1919, for which he was given the Cross of the Order of George I of Greece. As an authority on the history of architecture and ornament, he devised methods of analyzing and teaching these subjects which have widely influenced instruction in the rapidly growing number of architectural schools in America where his textbooks are standard.
Hamlin was assistant editor for architectural terms for the Standard Dictionary, and a frequent contributor to architectural periodicals, especially noteworthy being the series on architecture and its critics published in the Architectural Record from May 1915 to December 1927. He was consulting architect and expert adviser on many public buildings, notably the public library of Brooklyn, New York; the City Hall, Cleveland; and the Carnegie libraries and the Brooklyn Institute for the Borough of Brooklyn, New York. On the evening of March 21, 1926, he was struck by a passing automobile, and died shortly afterward.
Alfred Hamlin was a well-known architect of his time. With William R. Ware he was architect of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and with C. P. Warren he designed several buildings at Robert College, and the Soldiers Monument at Whitinsville, Massachusetts. His most popular literary work was A textbook of the History of Architecture (1906).
