Kenneth R.Bzoch, Ph.D., the developer of the Reel-3 Scale, a test for early emergent speech and language, draws upon 31 actual detailed case studies of infants and toddlers learning to speak to illustrate how babies learn to talk. The backbone case study presented throughout the book is a prospective study report of his first granddaughter's development supplemented by some 25 graduate students reports of well babies at different ages below 3 years. Specifics about their sound, word, and sentence development and receptive language decoding skills are given. For contrast, Case studies of a deaf and a hard of hearing child are presented. The author first describes four stages of speech and language development, defines basic linguistic terms regarding the nature of the symbolic language code, and discusses topics like the evolution and uniqueness of speech and language learning and of inner language behavior underlying our human nature.
