Kenzan Sugano was a scholar of the Chutze school, he started the Kaihodo private school in Fukagawa, Edo, with a subsidy from the Shogunate. His school was the most well-known private school of Confucianism in Kanto as the Kaitokudo School, established several years later in Osaka, was in Kansai. Both schools operated until the Meiji Restoration (1868).
