Kenzo Kawakami first opened a general merchandise shop at Vladivostok (1885), and later moved to Port Arthur where ne became building contractor through the recommendations of a Russian Commander. When the Russo-Japanese War was about to break out Kenzo Kawakami helped Japanese soldiers, disguised as Chinese coolies to penetrate deep into Russian lines. After the war remained at Dairen and established several banks and companies in Manchuria.
