Background
Bhat was born on January 3, 1940 in Pallathadka, Kerala, India; the son of Subraya and Lakshmi Bhat. He arrived in Venezuela in 1969. Eight years later he returned to India, where he lived with his family at Manipal.

Bhat received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Madras in 1959. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from the same university. In 1966, Keshava was given a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Madras.
Bhat began his career as a research assistant at Presidency College in 1966 and had held the position for two years. In 1969, he joined the University of Oriente Venezuela. Then in 1980, Keshava became a professor at that university, where he worked until his retirement in 1987 as a senior professor of botany. There Keshava taught Botany for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In 1990, he was elected to a Global Expert Committee on Medicinal Plants of developing countries during the First International Convention of South with colleagues in the field, in Tanzania. He also had a participation in the Earth Summit held in Brazil in June 1992 and at the World Conference on Food and Nutrition held in Rome in December 1992.
In addition to the large number of scientific papers presented both at national and international levels, Bhat has authored the following books - Herbolario Tropical (1981), Ayuda para el estudio de plantas con flores (1982) and Que Como y Cuando comer (1984).
Keshava Bhat is particularly known for a great number of scientific papers presented both at national and international levels, as well as for several books on various subjects in multiple languages.
Bhat initiated new educational methods to study natural environment in Venezuela and other countries.

1985Bhat was a botanist who advocated holistic living and alternate scientific approach. He extensively propagated consuming simple food and simple living in several countries like Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and many others. Respecting water, wind, plant and animals was part of his naturism and eating simple food, following simple way of life were the messages of his naturism.
On May 24, 1969 Keshava Bhat married Devaki Bhat. The marriage produced four children.
