Verney was born on March 28, 1960 in Ilfracombe, Devon, United Kingdom; the son of Neville and Susan Verney.
Verney received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Cambridge in 1981. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Keele. In 1987, Kevern was given a Ph.D. in American Studies from the same university.
Verney began his career as an assistant of desk officer at Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1986. Two years later he was appointed a lecturer of American history at Edge Hill University. Then in 2003, Kevern became a reader at that university. Since 2006 he has been a professor of history at Edge Hill University.
In addition, Verney served as a historical advisor and contributor to the BBC Radio Two documentary series "The Harry Belafonte Story" from 2005 to 2006. Since 2011 he has been a co-organizer of the Barack Obama Research Network, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Kevern was a commentator on the 2012 United States elections for BBC Radio Lancashire and gave a public lecture at Edge Hill, "Barack Obama and the Polarization of American Politics", to mark the President`s re-inauguration in January 2013. Nowadays he is also an associate dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Edge Hill University.
