Kichij Ikebe

Background

Kichij Ikebe was born in 1838.

Career

A retainer of the Kumamoto Clan, he was influenced by Takamori Sai- gd, famous statesman, when he was in Kagoshima. When Saigo rebelled against the Government in 1877, he organized the Kumamoto Band to assist Saigo. Although the Kumamoto Band often harassed the Government forces, it was defeated in the battle in Sadohara. He was captured while attempting to smuggle.

Achievements

• He opened a private school in Kumamoto to train young men of the clan.
