Kichizaemon Kaneko was born in Japan.
Kichizaemon Kaneko was a distinguished disciple of Rokuemon Kaneko, the famous Kabuki playwright.
Kichizaemon Kaneko began his career on the stage asan actor (1685), but three years later took to playing the clown and was immediately a great success (1688-1703). Joining Tojuro Sakata's troupe he met Monzaemon Chikamatsu and both began cooperating on writing plays for Tojuro. Towards the end of his career, he was playing leading roles at Sanjuro Arashi's theatre at Osaka, besides writing the script himself. It is said that Chikamatsu got the ideas for several of his plays from Kichizaemon. An undertaking titled Jijinshu in 2 vols., being a collection of criticisms of the stage, was one of his notable literary contributions.
