Kigin Kitamura studied waka poetry under Masaaki Asukai and Sanenari Shimizudani, and haiku poetry under Teishitsu Yasuhara and Teitoku Matsunaga.
Kigin Kitamura became Shinto priest of Tamatsushima Shrine in Kyoto, then master of Poetry Bureau of the Shogunate. He published many commentaries on Japanese classics and waka poetry which were of great use to posterity. Main works are Genji Monogatari Kogetsu-sho, Makura-no-soshi Shunsho-sho and Manyd-shu Shusui- shu, all commentaries on classics.
