Kimura Riemon entered business dealing in Western textiles and silk at Yokohama early in the Meiji Era and gradually by dint of hard work amassed a vast fortune. Later, helped in founding the Yokohama Specie Bank (1880), and subsequently became associated with several companies, including Yokohama Electric and Yokohama Electric Lamp companies, of which he was president. Was also associated with Kaemon Takashima in public works and civic administration.
Kimura Riemon elected member of Yokohama City Assembly (1889) and of the House of Peers (1902).
