Kinkichiro Honda

He became a probationary surveyor of the Industry Ministry (1872). Left the position on account of illness and became an assistant teacher at the English School in Hiroshima. Intending to be an artist, he went back to Tokyo and was initiated into oil painting by Shinkuro Kunizawa who had just returned from England. He became the director of the Shogido Art School operated by Kunizawa (1877). He was responsible for many drawing textbooks used at primary and middle schools throughout Japan. For 20 years from 1884, he taught drawing at the Military Academy and Naval Academy. His many disciples included such rioted painters as Banka Maruyama, Usen Ogawa and Izan Shimomura. Honda was also a distinguished garden architect of the traditional Japanese school.
