Shinkuro Kunisawa was born on January 27, 1848 in Kochi Prefecture. He was the son of a retainer Tosa Domain.

In 1872 he proceeded to England to study oil painting under John Edgar Williams.
Upon his return to Japan in 1874, Shinkuro Kunisawa founded a private school named Shogido at Kojimachi, Tokyo, to teach painting. Shinkuro Kunisawa contributed much toward the holding of art exhibitions in this country. Among his disciples were Chu Asai, Kinkichiro Honda, and Morizumi Isana.
