Became a jukan (scholar of Confucian learning) for the Lord of Hamamatsu (Shizuoka Prefecture), then of the Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), he was briefly an assistant professor at Daigaku Nanko (predecessor of Tokyo University).
