Knut R. Fladmark was born on March 27, 1946, in Oslo, Norway. He is the son of Reidar Fladmark and Dorothy (Claughton) Fladmark. His father was a sea captain and farmer, his mother was a secretary.
Fladmark received Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1948. Twenty-four years later he graduated from the University of Calgary as a Doctor of Philosophy.
Fladmark was appointed to the University of British Columbia as an assistant professor of anthropology and sociology in 1972. He began as an assistant professor at the Simon Fraser University, becoming a professor of archaeology in 1972, as well. He retired in August 2008.
Fladmark has contributed to a rich variety of archaeological topics, supervised countless archaeological students.
Currently, he has conducted researches on survey and excavations program in the Mount Edziza obsidian quarry area, excavation and analysis of Paleo-Indian and later components at the Charlie Lake Cave site in northeastern British Columbia, initial field work at Rocky Mountain Fort as part of the "British Columbia land-based fur trade project", and a survey for Paleo-Indian sites in the British Columbia southern interior.
Fladmark is a member of the Canadian Quaternary Association.
Fladmark married Sharon Johnson on August 25, 1972. The couple has 2 children - Kristin Leah and Disa Dorothy.
