Brian McIlroy was born on the 17th of December, 1959 in Belfast, United Kingdom; the son of a hardware store owner and a homemaker.
Brian McIlroy attended the University of Sheffield, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. He researched English Literature, Drama and Theatre studies, as well as Film Studies. He enrolled at the University of Leeds, where two years later he earned a Master of Arts degree in Drama and Theatre Studies. In 1984, he immigrated to Canada. There, Brian obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in English Literature from the University of British Columbia in 1991.
Brian McIlroy began his career in 1982 as a lecturer in video production, film studies and drama at Lewes Technical College (now East Sussex College) in Lewes, East Sussex, where he served two years. In 1988, he joined the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, as a sessional lecturer, holding the post until 1989.
In 1989, McIlroy enrolled at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he also worked as an instructor until 1991. Then, he was made an assistant professor, the position he held for five years. In addition, he was a Master of Arts film studies graduate advisor between 1989 and 2006. He is interested to supervise graduate students in a range of areas, including documentary, television drama and early cinema, as well as Canadian, British, Irish and the United States cinema. From 1996 to 2001, he served as an associate professor. Since 2001, Brian has served as a professor of film studies in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of British Columbia.
It's also worth noting, that McIlroy was chair of the film program in 1997-1999 and in 2004-2007 at the University of British Columbia. Also, he created a Bachelor of Arts film studies at the same university, where he taught a wide range of film studies courses, from first-year introductory courses to senior undergraduate seminars on documentary cinema and contemporary cinema in 2002-2006 and 2011-2015. In 2006, he carried out duties of a juror for the Raymond Klibansky Prize. Additionally, in 2005 and 2006, he was the founder and faculty advisor for the Cinephile, the University of British Columbia's film journal. Brian held the post of chair of the Arts One Program from 2009 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2013. Also, he was chair of the Coordinated Arts Program from 2016 to 2017.
Currently, Brian McIlroy is researching a topic on Early Cinema through the life and work of Irish-Canadian filmmaker Sidney Olcott. He enjoys the multidisciplinary nature of the Coordinated Arts Program and engaging with first-year students as they navigate a fascinating and challenging range of books, articles and assignments.
Brian McIlroy's first book, World Cinema 2: Sweden, was written in 1986. Since that time, he has written a number of other books. He critically examines the cinematic portrayal of Northern Ireland's political struggles in his work Shooting to Kill: Filmmaking and the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland (2001). His 2007 book, Genre and Cinema: Ireland and Transnationalism, brings together leading Irish film scholars to examine Irish cinema through the lens of genre theory and criticism. McIlroy has also written books on the history of Swedish cinema and Irish filmmaking, but his most Canadian work is Auteur/Provocateur: The Films of Denys Arcand (1995), a compilation of essays, that he edited with Andre Loiselle. Besides, he is a contributor of articles, chapters and reviews to various books and publications.
