Kodjo Barnabas Agbo was born on November 29, 1937, at Peki in Volta region.
Educated at Blengo Middle School and Achimota School, where he got the West African School Certificate in 1957.
Since the coup, he has been promoted commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, but despite the increased responsibility, he maintains the same rank as major, and like his army colleagues draws pre-coup pay, and lives in the same married quarters in the military barracks at Tema.
He joined the Audit Department in Accra and served for two years until July 1959, when he enlisted in the army. Soon demonstrating that he was officer material, he went to the cadet training centre at Teshie and then on to Sandhurst.
He became a platoon commander in 1963 and rose to company commander and adjutant in 1964. From 1966 to 1968 he was Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General at army HQ and was then transferred to Kumasi and I eshie.
From September 1971 until the coup of January 1972 he was second in command of the 1st Battalion stationed at the port of Tema. He is now commanding officer. His position as Commissioner for Industries is his first real experience of important extra-military responsibilities.
Lommissioner for Labour, Social Welfare and Cooperatives from May 1, 1973.
By nature he is an informal, practical individual. While most officers like to spruce up their combat uniforms, he wears his own quite unaltered, with no concessions to military vanity. This symbolises his functional life style.
