Kojima Kisaburo began his career as an apprentice in the photography studio of Matsugoro Tamaya at Edo. Later he branched out on his own and opened a studio at Kyobashi, Tokyo, giving himself the distinction of being the first photographer in the Ginza vicinity. His clients at the beginning were mostly actors and geisha girls.
