1903 at railroad car repair shops, Putilov Plant, Saint St. Petersburg. 1904 joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. After 1905 general strike was fired from Putilov Plant and barred from employment in other plants.
1911 drafted into the Baltic Fleet. Imprisoned for 6 months for insubordination. Sentenced to service in a penal battalion for refusal to serve in Navy.
Released on medical grounds and resumed revol work among Saint St. Petersburg workers. 1914 exiled from Saint St. Petersburg as ’’unreliable element". Prior to and during 1917 October Revol carried out active revol work.
Organized a Red Guard detachment and led it in July 1917 demonstration on side of Bolsheviks. In same month drove Lenin and Zinov’yev from Petrograd to a secure hideout. Deployed his detachment in defense of Petrograd during General Yudenich’s offensive.
Later held responsible positions at Russian Renault Plant.
Communist Party member from 1917.
