He worked as an official of the 2nd branch of His Own Imperial Majesty's Chancellery (1863-1878), then of the Ministry of State Property (since 1878). After he was an Actual State Councilor.
In the 1860s and 1870s he maintained friendly relations with Mikhail Alekseevich Veveyvitinov and his brother Vladimir Alekseevich Venevitinov. In "My Memories" (St. Petersburg, 1908, 1910, Volume 1-2) describes his stay in the village Novozhivotnoe Voronezh district of the Voronezh province (1866, 1871, 1877); on his last visit Golovin visited Voronezh (he was in the theater at the play "The Storm" by Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky).
