Career
After graduating from Igakukan (Shogun's School of Medicine) was appointed a teacher there (1841). Later became chief physician to the Shogun and was conferred the title of Hogen. In between, Koso Kitamura wrote some 30 books on medicine. Retiring from public life, he devoted his time to study and wrote Samidare-soshi (story of early summer rain), which lamented the end of the Shogunate regime (1868).
