He originally studied Shintoism under Isai Tamaki and waka poetry from Prince Arisugawa Yorihito.
Career
Kotosuga Tanikawa was a well-read person and his work Nihon-moki Tsusho (Interpretation of the History of Japan - 35 vols.), ranks with Norinaga Moto-ori's Kojiki-den as the two great masterpieces of the Japanese language. He was also credited as being the compiler of the Wakun-no-Shiori, the first Japanese dictionary.
