After graduating from Tokyo University (1906), Kumagai Taizo proceeded first to America (1908) and later to Germany (1911-1913) for further studies.
Returning home, Kumagai Taizo was appointed professor of a special department of Tohoku University (1913) and also made a special study of internal diseases. Kumagai Taizo was conferred doctorate (1916). He was appointed president of Tohoku University (1940), resigned due to age limit (1946) and was awarded medal of culture (1952).
