Yamada Yoshio was born on August 20, 1873, in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.
Yamada Yoshio attended Toyama Middle School. He was taught at elementary and middle schools and thereafter went to Tokyo in 1906. Yamada studied the Japanese language and literature by himself.
In 1925, Yamada Yoshio became a professor of Tohoku University. In 1940, he was a president of Jingu Kogakukan College and member of House of Peers. Was purged after the war. Yamada's works include Nippon Bunpo-ron (On Japanese Grammar), Manyo-shu Kogi (Lecture on Manyo-shu Anthology of Waka Poems) and Genji Monogatari-no Ongaku (The Music in the Tale of Genji).
