Kurt Blaukopf was born on February 15, 1914, in Chernivtsi (then Austria-Hungary, now Ukraine), but the family soon left Bukovina for Vienna. There is no exact information about his parents.
Kurt Blaukopf studied music theory, law, and political science in Vienna from 1932 to 1937, but After the Anschluss in 1938, he had to leave Austria and he moved to Paris. Later in 1940, he moved to Jerusalem, where he continued his studies.
In 1994 Blaukopf was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Vienna.
Kurt Blaukopf started his career as a freelance musicologist and music critic in 1947. In 1962 he started to work as a lecturer at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Blaukopf held this post until 1984. In 1974 he became an honorary professor and Austria's first and only full professor of music sociology in 1977.
In 1969 Kurt Blaukopf initiated the founding of the MEDIACULT Institute (International Research Institute for Media, Communication and Cultural Development) and was its director until 1985. He also wrote books about music sociology such as Musical Life in a Changing Society, which became his most famous book.
