Kuzma Viktorovich was a member of the Great Patriotic War, participated in the defense of Odessa and Sevastopol. In August 1942 he participated in the defense of Novorossiysk, where he was wounded.
After treatment, as part of the landing group under the command of Ts. Kunikov, in February 1943 landed near the village of Stanichka (now Kunikovka) and participated in the battles at the captured bridgehead, called "Malaya Zemlya".
In May 1943, Kuzma Viktorovich became a Deputy Commander of the machine gunners department of the 384th Separate Marine Corps Battalion (Black Sea Fleet, Odessa Naval Base). During this year he took part in landing operations in the cities of the Azov coast: Taganrog, Mariupol, Osipenko (now Berdyansk).
On March 26, 1944, as part of the landing party landed behind enemy lines in the port of Nikolaev (twenty days before the Soviet offensive). During two days before the arrival of Soviet troops, Kuzma Viktorovich waged an unequal battle, fought off 18 attacks of the enemy and killed more than 700 enemy's soldiers and officers. Kuzma Shpak passed away of wounds, received in this battle.
