Leo Gruber was born on June 7, 1908 in Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
Leo Gruber studied at the Abitur Realgymnasium in Cologne-Lindenthal (1926), then undertook art studies at Kolner Werkschulen. From 1926 to 1930 he studied art history, languages, literature and ethnology at Cologne University. While a student at Cologne he had edited the anti-Nazi weeklies Kolner Kurier and Westdeutscher Kurier, which were suppressed in 1933.
Since 1960 Leo Gruber organized Photokina cultural exhibitions - over 300 international shows. Previously he worked for Photokina in a general promoting capacity (from 1949). He lived in England (1933-1939) for political reasons, working as a photo, photostat and microfilm expert.
