Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hansen grew up in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, where he was a basketball star at Centennial Secondary School.

Career
He would go onto play his college basketball at the University of Washington in the United States. Hansen was selected in two National Basketball Association Drafts: first in 1976, by the Chicago Bulls, and then in 1977, by the Los Angeles Lakers. In 1979, Hansen made his National Basketball Association debut with the Seattle SuperSonics.
He also played with Football Club Barcelona.
