Laura Salverson was born on December 9, 1890 in Winnipeg, Winnipeg Capital Region, Canada, in the family of Laurus and Ingiborg (Gudsmundotte) Goodman. Her parents immigrated to Winnipeg in 1887 from Grundir in Bolungarvík, Iceland.
Education
Laura attended a public school in Duluth. Her early education was frequently interrupted and she did not learn English until she was ten.
Career
Laura first Canadian novel, "The Viking Heart", writen in 1923, follows the immigration of 1400 Icelanders in 1876 to Manitoba until the First World War. In 1937 she wrote her second novel "The Dark Weaver". Then came her third novel "When Sparrow Falls" writen in 1925. In 1939, Salverson published her autobiography, "Confessions of an Immigrant’s Daughter", which won her another Governor-General’s Award.
