Laurie Bernstein was born on December 14, 1952, in New York City, New York, United States. She is a daughter of Sylvester Jacob Bernstein and Priscilla Kastenbaum.
Laurie Bernstein obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with honors from Sonoma State University in 1976. It was followed by a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980 and 1987 respectively.
Laurie Bernstein studied her career at Sonoma State University where she served as a student instructor from 1976 to 1978. Three years later, she became a teaching assistant at the University of California, Berkeley serving in that capacity till 1986. The following year, Bernstein joined the professor’s staff of Vassar College as an assistant professor working there for a couple of subsequent years.
After serving as an assistant professor at Drew University from 1991 to 1992, Laurie Bernstein was invited to Rutgers University-Camden first as an assistant professor. She became an associate five years later. She directed the women's studies program at Rutgers since 2001 and retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2019. Other educational posts of Bernstein include the University of California, Davis and Swarthmore College.
Laurie Bernstein's first book, Sonia’s Daughters: Prostitutes and Their Regulation in Imperial Russia, was published in 1995. It is a study of prostitution during Russia’s urbanization and industrialization in the late nineteenth century. Bernstein then edited and co-introduced Mary M. Leder’s Mv Life in Stalinist Russia: An American Woman Looks Back.
The most recent book projects by Bernstein include Children of the Motherland: Orphans in Soviet Russia and Revolutionary Russia: A History in Documents co-authored with Robert Weinberg.
Laurie Bernstein has also written a lot of articles and reviews on the works focused on the early and late modern European history. She has contributed to a great number of books on the topic.
Laurie Bernstein is an accomplished historian and author who has obtained many fellowships and grants for her contributions to the study of early and late modern European history, including the history of Russia.
She has been a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, and others. In 1997, she received the Rutgers University Board of Trustees Research Fellowship for Scholarly Excellence.
Bernstein has such awards to her credit as Rutgers University Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and JoAnn Mower Endowed Prize in Teaching Excellence. In 2012, she was named Leland Butler Advisor of the Year and Rutgers University Leader in Faculty Diversity.
